The people of Milan are hallmarked by their passionate character, and this is one of the keys to understanding the city. This approach has always played a fundamental part in its various artistic expressions – such as opera at La Scala – both in terms of the performers, and the spectators who provide their judgement and generous enthusiasm.
The same is true of ordinary life in the city, with its enticing nightlife opportunities, the aperitifs ritual, entertainment, cinemas and theatres. Milan has no intention of abandoning its quality of life, rich in interests, values and relations.
Milan is also an important point of reference for top-level cooking, in which tradition blends with innovation. Eating in a good restaurant is a pleasure, a passion, and a widespread habit. The city’s chefs are amongst the most famous of all; its recipes have become famous dishes worldwide and one of the city’s visitor’s cards. Milan’s range of hotels is of remarkable prestige, with high points of sophisticated elegance.
Another sector that is undergoing constant development is that of publishing. Newspapers and magazines of national and international prestige are supported by the passion and daily talent of those who work for them.
In addition, the wealth and energy of the many solidarity organizations in the city provide an example of how a passionate character can favour commitment to helping other people. In Milan there are three thousand volunteer associations, representing 17.2% of the total for Italy. They employ about 25,000 people and 80,000 volunteers. The Food Bank is another institution that developed in Milan. This not-for-profit association works with the foods industry and with the general public, in order to give food to people in need.
