Christmas trees in the city 2017

Xmas wouldn’t be Xmas in Milan without the traditional Christmas tree in Piazza Duomo.

On December 6th the great Christmas tree will be switched on and, this year, it will be brighter than ever. Hundreds of lights and decorations will illuminate Milan’s central piazza.

To represent the true symbol of Christmas in the city centre the red spruce has been selected in full respect of the environment in collaboration with the Trentino Alto Adige Forestry Commission as a tree those destined for felling, in line with the environmental sustainability criteria that characterizes Christmas in Milan.

The tallest Christmas tree ever in Piazza Duomo is pretty impressive: 30 meters high, 100 thousand warm white lights and over 700 glittering white balls to amp up the brightness! The two Led display walls at the base of the tree will host celebrity greetings along with the most fun social messages using the #Natallegria hashtag.

This year the tree is sponsored by Sky and the switch-on will be a great excuse for a spectacular event on Wednesday, December 6th from 16:00 onwards: some of Sky's most well-known faces, along with mascots of favourite characters, will be present and thousands of luminous bracelets will be distributed free of charge to contribute to the choreography of lights and colours that will make the switch-on ceremony an occasion not-to-be-missed. For the occasion, Lodovica Comello will perform in a special Christmas-themed musical performance.

And when the festive season finally wraps up the wood from the tree will be recycled to create public amenities around the city, thanks to the collaboration between the School and Department of Design at the Politecnico di Milano and Sky Academy.

Albero di Natale in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Other decorative trees are also positioned in different places around the city. First and foremost the glittering tree in the Octagon of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II which is an awesome sight for those walking underneath the festively illuminated dome; the silhouette of this festooned tree can also be glimpsed from piazza Duomo, set against the backdrop of the Milanese ‘living room’.

The beautiful Bulgari tree set up in Piazza della Scala is an extra-special 11 metre-high installation made of coloured light explosions, a creative tribute to the joy of fireworks with an incredible 87 thousand micro Led lamps.

And there's lots more to be enjoyed, such as for example the tree in front of the Central Station in piazza Duca d'Aosta sponsored by A2A.

The entire city dresses up to celebrate the favourite day of the year. So all you have to do now is come and explore the city and take pics of the most beautiful trees!
