Sporty Milan

Itinerary description

There is a great passion for sports in Milan. This sports-focused itinerary cannot help but depart from the view of the Stadio Meazza in San Siro, also known as the “Scala del calcio”; it is the setting for charming matches and the legends that accompany them. Of particular interest is the Museum of Milan-Inter, which collects shirts, souvenirs, and relics that once belonged to the champions of these two Milanese teams. At a short distance, you can find the Hippodrome, where you can attend races in a relaxed environment amidst nature.

Near the city centre is the Arena Civica of Gianni Brera, an elegant sporting place created by the neoclassic architect Luigi Canonica. In this amphitheatre-shaped building, manifestations of all kinds have taken  place, some of which were truly incredible: horse and chariot races, naval battles, rowing races, bicycle races, football matches, boxing, and American football games. Today it hosts track and field events and other non-athletic functions. Other historic places of Milanese sports are the Velodromo Maspes Vigorelli, the stage for fascinating races for track cycling champions and the Palazzo del Ghiaccio on Via Piranesi.

Going toward the countryside you can find the former Palalido, the legendary temple of Milanese basketball, whose floors hosted the Olimpia Milano in the golden years, as well as the Idroscalo, also known as the “sea of Milan,” an artificial water basin designed also for swimming.
