Parco Cassina de' Pomm
Cassina de' Pomm Park
The park has been recently developed on the ex Bonomi industrial area. A surface covering 10 thousand square metres at Cassina di Pomm (in Milanese dialect it means the Apple Farmstead) that it takes its name from.
One can stroll immersed in the greenery using the pedestrian paths that crisscross the land, following an artificial stream that flows in a ring shape forming a lake that has water games or simply dedicate oneself to sporty activities set up in the eastern side of the park. There are play areas for children and petanque for bowling fans. Something to suit everyone can be found in this new park.
Amongst the tree species present are: Robinia pseudoacacia (Black locust), Prunus cerasifera (Cherry plum), Populus nigra (Black popular), Tilia cordata (Littleleaf linden), Ailanthus altissima (Tree of Heaven), Acer negundo (American maple), Carpinus betulus (White Hornbeam), Prunus avium nigra 'Italica' (Sweet cherry).
The Park takes its name from the historical Osteria (tavern) which can still be found on the opposite bank of the old Martesana canal. Post station with horse resting place, in the nineteenth century it was frequented by the poet Carlo Porta and his friends and also the Napoleonic viceroy Eugenio Beauharnais.
The Martesana canal runs adjacent to the “Cassina di Pomm” with a pedestrian route through the green areas and a cycling park that leads from Milan (follow Via Melchiorre Gioia – via De Marchi, then Via Padova) to Cassano d'Adda.
According to some sources, in the area occupied by the park-garden “Cassina di Pomm”, there was a candle factory known by the locals as “la fabbrica del pan fiss” ( the “fixed bread” factory referring to a fixed or guaranteed wage).
Also the iron bridge over the Martesana, that lead directly into the factory and which is still in use today, was called by the populus “Pont del pan fiss”, (Bridge of fixed bread) now more pompously called “Ponte di Leonardo” (Leonardo’s bridge).
It can be reached with bus routes 43 and 81.
