Sforza Castle Art Gallery

General information

This splendid art gallery is located inside the Castle. Like other glorious Milan institutions such as the Brera and Ambrosiana Galleries, it provides an indication of the remarkable heritage of art possessed by the city.

It comprises 1,500 paintings, of which 230 are exhibited in six halls. The exhibition sequence is designed to highlight differences in style, and to illustrate the successive schools and languages. Today, the Gallery’s collection is considered as one of the most important of its type.

It presents fine examples of late Lombard Gothic art, an expression of the Visconti and Sforza courts; the Trivulzio collection; and many other important works acquired by donations from illustrious citizens, collectors and scholars.
A complete and extensive section is dedicated to Renaissance works, with paintings by Foppa, Bergognone and Bramantino, culminating in the superb canvases by Andrea Mantegna and Antonello da Messina.
The new design of the Gallery is innovative in that furniture and sculptural objects with symbolic significance are included in the halls dedicated to paintings.

Don't miss

There are certain works held inside the Pinacoteca del Castello that are a must-see: Andrea Mantegna’s “Madonna in Glory Among Saints and Angels”, the famous painting realised between 1495 and 1497; “Madonna with Child”, the masterpiece by Vincenzo Foppa; “Portrait of a Young Man”, one of the main portraits of Lorenzo Lotto”; “Palazzo dei Giureconsulti and Palazzo Broletto in Milan”, by Bernardo Bellotto; “Saint Benedict”, painting by Antonello da Messina; and the two views of Venice, two pieces by Canaletto.
