MUDEC - The Museum of Cultures
On March 27th, 2015 MUDEC – the Museum of Cultures – became the latest addition to the museum landscape in Milan; an interdisciplinary centre dedicated to the various testimonies and cultures of the world which, with its interdisciplinary approach, aims to become the main Italian point of reference for research, promotion and the edutainment of creativity and art.
It has been recuperated from the industrial archaeological site of the former Ansaldo manufacturing works, in Zona Tortona; MUDEC reinterprets the spaces that it fits into with square-shaped forms coated with zinc and with a glass structure - illuminated 24/7 - that geometrically "breaks” the building that hosts it.
The new space is characterised by an open plan organic central hall which generates an internal courtyard, a covered piazza that is a meeting place between cultures and the community.
The interior of the building is allocated to different spaces distributed over 17.000m2 and offers visitors a variety of cultural activities and services,: the museum permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, an auditorium; Mudec Bistrot, Mudec Design Store, Mudec Club restaurant, plus, lecture rooms, the Mudec Junior area and parking spaces.
From March onwards, most of the permanent collection will be on view in the warehouses and will be accessible with guided tours then, at the end of Expo Milano 2015, the museum circuit with the ethnographic collections of the Municipality of Milan will be inaugurated in the exhibition halls.
The exhibition programme will be enhanced by an agenda of collateral events that will complement the cultural proposal. There will also be a cafeteria, a high-quality restaurant and a Junior Space, an area where children from 4 to 9 years will be able to delve in-depth into the issue of non-European cultures with creative and multimedia workshops.
