The ‘Sacred Conversation’ by Titian at Palazzo Marino for Christmas 2017
This year the traditional Christmas invite to view great art at Palazzo Marino returns to the Sala Alessi with a masterpiece by Titian, the majestic altarpiece ‘Sacra conversazione - Sacred Conversation 1520 (Pala Gozzi)’ will be on loan from the ‘Pinacoteca Civica’ Francesco Podesti of Ancona. It can be visited, with free admission, from 5th December to 14th January 2018.
Visitors will be admitted to the exhibition in groups and will be greeted by art historians, coordinated by Civita, who will act as guides.
Interestingly visitors can observe not only Titian’s masterpiece but also the rear of the painted panel which shows pencil sketches, partly shaded by a brush, drawn by Titian himself depicting several heads, one of which could have been the sketch for the Child in a first draft of the painting. This unique opportunity to admire the rear of the great altarpiece, (oil on board, 312 x 215 cm), makes it possible to discover how these works of great importance and prevalence in the history of Italian art were created in the sixteenth century.
Painted in 1520 by the thirty-year-old Titan for the merchant of Dubrovnik, Luigi Gozzi, and destined for the main altar of the church of San Francesco ad Alto in Ancona, the ‘Sacred Conversation’ is the first painting signed and dated by Titian known to us: the following words ALOYXIUS GOTIUS RAGOSINUS / FECIT FIERI / MDXX / TITIANUS CADORINUS PINSIT can be seen at the bottom of the cartouche.
Further enhancing the beauty of the masterpiece is the innovative lighting engineering system curated by the architect Francesco Murano, who will use the technique of light obtained by mixing hot and cold lights to create a particularly clear and radiant vision of the colours.
Curated by Stefano Zuffi, the exhibition is promoted by the Municipality of Milan, Intesa Sanpaolo - an institutional partner - with the support of the Rinascente department store. The initiative is coordinated by Palazzo Reale and co-produced with the City of Ancona - the ‘Francesco Podesti’ Pinacoteca Civica in collaboration with the Gallerie d'Italia in Piazza Scala and organized together with Civita.
